Tom began running in college, having wrestled and skied in high school, though his dad encouraged him to run high school track. Running with his college cross country team strictly as a social event started a life-long commitment to running. Tom did not race until after college entering in what was back then called a “Mini Marathon”, aka 10K race, where he finished at 36:35 never losing sight of the winner…so that was what dad meant! Tom ran solo until 2007 when he joined North Jersey Masters (NJM) at their invitation having done well in NJM’s Ridgewood, NJ 10K, finishing in the ~42 minute range.

Tom’s solo years while not un-structured, did not include any specific training other than consistently getting out to run. In his business travels at the end of a day’s meetings, Tom would skip the cocktail hour with a few other like minded runners to log in a few miles and get back in time, sometimes just in time, for dinner. His four children saw the consistent adherence to daily exercise and as a result are all committed to exercise, running and are out-door people.

Tom ran in corporate races in NYC’s Central Park, including the Corporate Challenge series and the “Trevira 10 Mile Twosome” finishing that race in 60 minutes flat to the background music of “Chariots of Fire” as an inspirational soundtrack.

Tom served on the Board of Directors for NJM for years. His roles included the starting and then chairing the Sponsorship Committee, participating in the race planning and race day activities for the club’s 10K and 5K Memorial Day Race and then finishing his years on the Board as Vice President.

Now a resident in Old Town, Alexandria Tom is pleased to be part of the active NOVA running community.
